I almost didn’t look at the name on her credit card. She was one of those people you never look at twice: middle aged, unremarkable features, short light brown hair, but when I read the name,“Ruth D. van Winkel”, I had to say something.
“Hello, this is the first time I’ve met someone with your name,” I laughed.
R. van Winkel tried to smile as she signed her receipt.
Julian, at the register next to me, overheard our conversation, so I showed him the Visa card.
“Oh yes,” he said, “It is unusual. It’s a name you don’t see very often these days. I like it: Ruth.”
“You’re quite right. It isn’t very popular,” she said, “I personally don’t know anyone else called Ruth,” and Mrs. R. van Winkel smiled as she left the store.
