Museum Musing: “What’s upstairs?”

Last Sunday a middle-aged American woman asked me, “What’s upstairs of this building?”

“Paintings are on the second floor of all the buildings,” I said

“Do you have more than one painting upstairs?” she asked

“Excuse me?” I said

“Do you only have one Van Gogh painting?” she said (Why do Americans always say Van Go?)

“Madam,” I said speaking very slowly, “this is a museum. You will find  many paintings hanging on all the walls, of all the rooms.”

“So why does this map of the museum only show a picture of one Van Go.. painting?” she said

ohmy word! I had to explain to her that the map is a visual aid for visitors so they can see at a glance where to find the Impressionist paintings.

The museum map doesn’t show all the paintings on exhibit?? I might have to walk around and actually look at them all?? I love it. Congrats on the baby blog Rosie 🙂

I'd be delighted if you left me a comment
